horicon marsh plant guide

This book serves as a field guide to some of the plants native to the Horicon Marsh in south-central Wisconsin. Each spread contains images of a flower or plant on one page and a description and facts about it on the opposite page. The descriptions emphasize the visual presentation of the plant or flower, from the leaves to the stems to the flowers. The facts include soil type, height and spread, and interesting notes about pest resistance or attraction.

This book seeks to help viewers encounter plants in a more thorough way. Instead of just walking through the marsh on the various trails without thought, viewers could take this field guide and try to identify plants and learn from them. I also intended for this to be useful for the many photographers that come to the marsh seeking plant life or specific plants. They could use this guide to locate plants or to verify the plants they’re seeing around them. The form of this book is the most advantageous part of it, as its size makes it easy to carry around and easy to put in a pocket when you don’t need it. It is also relatively light on text, so it wouldn’t be too much information for a younger nature enthusiast or someone who doesn’t desire extensive information.
